New Providence Cemetery

[Contributed by Nancy Lee nllee@ktis.net, secretary
of the Montgomery County Genealogical Society.]

Located on Loutre Creek at the site of the former New Providence Baptist Church 1826-1906. Section 5, Township 48 North, Range 6 West. Ten acres of land were set aside by Jabez Peveler for a church site.

Current treasurer of the cemetery association, Bessie Weeks, has added the notes and family relationships for the record.

Ann and Emanuel Sailor, William and Elizabeth Jones, Maggie Cobb, and Sibby Peveler were all charter members of New Providence Church with Jabez and Hannah Ham being among the organizers in 1826.

There must have been a typhoid epidemic in 1844 as three Sailor family members died Sept. 28, 1844, mother, Ann, and sons, John and Thomas. Also dying that day was Alfred Cobb, son of Emanuel Sailor's sister, Sarah (Sally) Cobb. Emanuel died two days later, and Shelton Cobb on September 14, 1844. It was handed down that there was high water at the time.

Bessie Weeks tells us: "My grandfather, John T. Sailor, died Jan. 13, 1927. At that time it was very cold, the ground frozen with a heavy snow. Mr. Charley Hopper was asked to dig Grandfather's grave. Without help, Charley rode horseback about two miles and dug the grave. No doubt with pick, shovel, and crowbar."
